Wi-Fi calling 101: How to use it and when you actually need it

Wi-Fi calling, available on smartphones and many flip phones, allows users to make calls, texts, and video calls using Wi-Fi, extending coverage beyond cellular networks. Features include emergency location sharing and compatibility with other calling apps. Setup varies slightly depending on the device, with options for activation on iPhones, Androids, and basic phones.

Despite cellular service outages, Wi-Fi calling extends mobile services through home internet connections, enabling texting and video calls. With broad accessibility across various phone types, including basic flip phones, Wi-Fi calling offers an emergency fallback or a default connection for homes with spotty reception. It complements other messaging apps, including FaceTime, Google Meet, and WhatsApp.

To activate Wi-Fi calling: On iPhones, navigate to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling and enter your address for emergency services. On Androids, go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling. Basic phones also support Wi-Fi calling, though steps vary.

In case of cellular outages, access Wi-Fi hotspots provided by internet service providers or local establishments. For emergencies without cellular service, iPhone 14 and 15 offer Emergency SOS via Satellite, while Samsung plans to develop similar options for future phones.
